Yoga Nidra: Journey to the heart of inner wisdom
Andrea C. Skelly, PhD, MPH
The literal translation of Yoga Nidra is “yoga sleep” and, according to Yoga scholar Georg Feuerstein, this term is used widely to denote the highest state of consciousness in post classical Yoga literature. It is also used by more modern yoga experts to designate a state of deep relaxation. This state of deep relaxation facilitates the progressive release of muscular, emotional and mental tensions via a specific sequence of suggestions and images. Swami Satyananda Saraswati writes that “release of tension, relaxation and peace of mind are the secret of transformation”. Psychologist and Yogi Richard Miller, PhD, describes Yoga Nidra as a re-educational process that allows one to learn to blend deep relaxation with innate wisdom. It is a process which enables one to be aware of and give up the aversions and attachments that are the source of stress, pain, conflict, anxiety, etc. Some refer to it as “psychic sleep’ and there are a variety of Yoga Nidra practices. Because of the deep relaxation, regular practitioners report that they have more energy and stamina. Some Yogis believe that even a short 20 to 30 minute practice is the equivalent of several hours of sleep. The bottom line is that Yoga Nidra is a powerful tool for tapping into our inner resources and dealing with the modern stresses and disenfranchisement from our inner energy and being that have become so prevalent in society.
Yogis and yoginis are well aware of the power of asana (i.e. Yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing exercises) as the most natural way to relieve stress. These practices affect our central nervous system, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems and more! They also have a profound effect on “stilling the mind” and facilitate mediation. These practices are about increasing our life force, the positive healthy energy, in part by helping diminish stress and its effects.
Yoga Nidra expounds on these themes and takes your yogic journey to new levels of clarity and transformation. Ancient wisdom and science identify three states that are constantly changing, namely the physical, the mental and the energetic. From the Yogic perspective, these can be further divided into sheaths called koshas (kosha = sheath or body) which can change and one changeless Essence of our True Nature. By systematically attending to each sheath, the process of Yoga Nidra allows one to not only relax more deeply than in usual “sleep” states but also helps one to let go of the aversions and attachments associated with each. As one moves through the sheaths/stages of Yoga Nidra, stress, conflict and issues resolve, allowing deeper insight, contentment and inner peace. The practice increases not only physical energy, but our life-force energy as well.
